In a special focus on innovation and new technologies, Anne-Sophie David, journalist for the New Economist, writes on MISSING.NET, research engine for missing people. This tool, conceived by the Red Helmets Foundation, is devoted  to be used after natural disasters occur. Excerpts of the article.





On monday October 04th, Novela 2010 celebrated "digital solidarity day".






Decision-makers, leaders and stakeholders from the Free/Open Source movement met with the ambition to build the digital future based on open source. They wanted an event that would tie open software in with economics and social initiatives.






In 1983, the 30th of August has been consecrated  "International Day for the Disappeared". Each year, it is the occasion to evoke these dramatic situations endured by thousands of persons.

The causes of disappearances are numerous; they go from armed conflicts to natural catastrophes. During the last decade, floods, earthquakes and hurricanes are responsible for the major part of disappearances.






Object : One year after having won the call for proposal “Web innovant”, initiated by the French Secretariat of State to Digital Economy, the Red Helmets Foundation, in partnership with Bearstech and European Consulting Services, launches the ALPHA version of MISSING, the global search engine for missing people.

Web 2.0 et serious gaming. En mai 2009, la secrétaire d'Etat au Développement de l'économie numérique, Nathalie Kociusko-Morizet, lançait un appel à projets sur ces deux créneaux, dans le cadre du plan de relance numérique.





PARIS — Le secrétariat d'Etat à l'Economie Numérique a annoncé mardi avoir retenu 92 dossiers, dans le cadre de ses appels à projets visant à soutenir les jeux vidéo dits "sérieux", à vocation pédagogique ou de sensibilisation, ainsi que des services web innovants.

Du 27 mai, date du lancement des appels à candidatures, au 6 juillet, 506 projets ont été déposés, dont 166 pour les jeux vidéos "sérieux".






Each natural disaster involves the disappearance of many victims. However, nowadays no system makes it possible for families to carry out an active and optimum searching. 

That is why the Red Helmets Foundation suggests the creation of a worldwide humanitarian search engine of missing people named MISSING, to systematize the steps and to centralize information within the first crucial hours of the crisis.
