Within the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean, launched in July 2008 by the French President, the Red Helmets Foundation put forward the idea of the creation of Mediterranean Red Helmets, as a non-governmental project.
The Mediterranean area is indeed struck very often by natural disasters. Deprived from logistic and human resources, countries can’t face the consequences of these disasters and have only but to wait for rescue teams from abroad to help the victims efficiently.
They would be the organ to refer to, as long as the victims are concerned. They would pool human and logistic resources of each member state and coordinate their action, as soon as a disaster is occurring. Moreiver, they would perfectly embody the idea of peace represented by the Union for the Mediterranean. They would indeed be a concrete proof of solidarity between all the countries of the euromediterranean area.
